Music at Our School

At Lanchester EP Primary School we strongly believe in giving our children as many opportunities as possible. We offer the children the chance to play guitar and keyboards in connection with our teachers from Music Works. We also have links with Durham Music Service who come into school to offer regular woodwind and brass lessons. We are lucky enough to have funding to support in-house lessons where we feel children may benefit from music therapy or additional music lessons whether that is to improve communication and socialization, help children express and identify their emotions or to promote wellness, relaxation and positive moods.

After school music clubs are popular at school too. We have a thriving choir who just this year have performed at the Chinese New Year celebration at Durham Town Hall, Schools North-East Patrons Dinner and Durham Cathedral. Our latest project involves collaborating with other North East schools to put on a performance of Mozart’s The Magic Flute.

Due to the popularity of choir we have had to put on an additional extra-curricular club to keep more children singing! We also offer one off clubs to keep children interested in their music from singing groups for the younger children to ukulele clubs. Our latest club is Singing Playgrounds, teaching a group of children a number of playground games to take out into our school yard to help communication and socializing.

Every two years we put on a school musical involving all the children from Key Stage 2. It is very important to our school that the whole school community is involved and not just a select group in order for every child to feel that buzz of teamwork and pride of what we hope is an amazing production. Recent performances have been One Sun, One World (2022), Ocean World (2020) and Yanomamo (2018).
